Japanese Family Crest (Mon) Suncatcher

This remains one of my favorite custom pieces. A client came to me with the image of her family's crest, or Mon in Japanese, to be translated into a stained glass suncatcher.

The story is remarkable: knowledge of the Mon was lost when her family was sent to the internment camps during WWII. Through dedicated research involving her family elders and Japan’s national archive, she was able to recover this piece of her family history.

We created several of these suncatchers, which were gifted during a family reunion. My client shares that her relatives now display them proudly as treasured symbols.

As a Japanese American artist, being entrusted with a project that helped reclaim such a significant part of a family’s identity was a deep honor.

The Agate Sunrise Panel

This piece is a fantastic example of collaborating with a client to turn a personal find into a lasting work of art.

I met this couple at an art show, and the gentleman had a stunning, large piece of agate he found during a walk on the beach. He wanted a unique way to display his treasured specimen.

We decided to modify my "Sunrise Panel" design, adapting it specifically to highlight the gem. I kept the overall structure similar to the original design but completely customized the glass palette to enhance the natural tones of the agate.

The core challenge was the structural work: I had to engineer a minimal cradle and hanging system to securely seat the gemstone while obscuring as little of its natural beauty as possible.

The finished panel did exactly that, and it now sits in their window, using the morning light to both showcase the agate and warm their room with a custom sunrise.

Mountain River Diptych Panel Set

A wonderful client contacted me about creating custom panels for the windows flanking her fireplace. She fell in love with the movement and flow of the Winding River Triptych she saw on the website.

We took that river concept and elevated it, modifying the design into a diptych (a set of two panels) that incorporated a mountain range, pine trees, and a continuous winding river across both pieces.

After working through several revisions, the final design perfectly captured her vision of the landscape. We collaboratively positioned the design to work with the glass's natural swirl and color variations to achieve the most dynamic effect.

The stunning finished set is a beautiful representation of the Pacific Northwest. As an added feature, the panels are designed to be both free-standing and hanging, offering flexible display options for her home.

Let's create something special

Whether you have a specific vision or need to workshop ideas, we're here to collaborate with you to bring your custom creation to life.

Getting Started & Design

The best way is to fill out my commission inquiry form (or send an email). Please include as much detail as possible: the general idea (e.g., a flower, an abstract piece, a family crest), the desired size or dimensions, glass color, etc. Pictures of the desired location or any inspirational images are incredibly helpful!

Not a problem! That's what the collaboration is for. You can simply tell me the theme, color palette, or the emotional tone you want the piece to convey. We can also start by modifying an existing design from my portfolio to perfectly suit your needs (e.g., changing the glass, size, or shape).

Process & Timeline

It generally involves these steps:

  1. Initial Inquiry: You submit your idea and details.
  2. Quote & Sketch: I provide a price quote, a preliminary timeline, and a basic sketch or design concept.
  3. Deposit & Design Refinement: Once the quote is accepted, a 50% non-refundable deposit is paid to secure the commission and begin detailed pattern work. We finalize the glass selection and pattern.
  4. Creation: I craft the piece, sending you progress photos at key stages.
  5. Completion & Final Payment: Once the piece is finished and approved, the remaining 50% balance plus shipping costs are paid.
  6. Delivery: Your unique piece is carefully packaged and shipped.

The timeline varies based on complexity, size, and my current queue. Typically, a custom panel or suncatcher takes 4 to 8 weeks from the date the deposit is paid and the design is finalized.

If you have a firm deadline (like an anniversary or birthday), please let me know at the beginning so I can confirm whether a rush order is possible.

Yes. You will receive a final pattern drawing for approval, and we will confirm all glass selections before I begin the physical fabrication.

Pricing & Payment

Custom work is priced based on several factors, including:

  • Size (the overall square footage)
  • Complexity (intricate designs, curved lines, and small pieces of glass take significantly more time)
  • Materials (specialty or antique glass, custom bevels, or integrated items)
  • Time (design and fabrication hours)

As a general rule, commissions start at a price close to a similar existing piece, then a Design Fee of $50/hr is added to that for the CAD work. I will provide a clear, detailed quote based on your specific request.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to secure your slot and begin the design and material purchasing process. The remaining balance (50% plus shipping) is due upon completion, before the piece is shipped.

Rights & Usage

As the artist, I retain the copyright to all my designs, including custom work. This means I retain the right to photograph and use the images of the final piece for my portfolio, website, and promotional materials. The client owns the physical piece of art itself.

Absolutely! This is a great way to create family heirlooms, as the original design and pattern work is already complete. You can commission reproductions of your design at any time with no additional Design Fee added.
